‘The Shannara Chronicles’ Cancelled After Two Seasons On Spike

It is official — Shannara Chronicles has been canceled after its second season, and the heads at Spike have finalized the decision to take the show off the air. Even though the two seasons that aired were moderately successful and managed to build up a nice following, it looks like the bosses at the network were not entirely pleased with the way things turned out.

To be fair, ratings could have been more impressive for the second season, and there was a noticeable decline in interest towards the production from various sides, but many people still had their hopes that they would get to see new episodes. Perhaps it was more of a niche production rather than something that managed to enter the mainstream properly, but that should not automatically brand it as a failure.

Reports indicate that things behind the scenes may have been more complicated than what we saw publicly though, as the show was apparently in a more difficult situation than the producers let on. If these reports are true, the difference in ratings between season 1 and season 2 is definitely significant enough to warrant taking the show off the air.

It is possible that the core idea behind the production might get picked up by someone else and revived in an original way, although there are not many hopes for that at this point. While many people would love to see some kind of continuation to the style that Shannara Chronicles brought to the screen, it would be random luck more than anything if it ended up happening, so nobody should realistically expect it right now.

Spike cancelled the Shannara Chronicles in part because of its re-branding as the Paramount Network. The producers are hoping that they will be able to find a new home for its third season.

The series was previously on MTV for its first season.
